UnionPay International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China UnionPay, has announced that the Hong Kong taxis will now start accepting its cards issued worldwide.

When taking taxis with the UnionPay logo, cardholders can pay for the taxi fares by using UnionPay cards or via UnionPay mobile QuickPass.

The 18,000 taxis in Hong Kong will be able to accept UnionPay QR Code payment by year-end, UnionPay said.

UnionPay is currently accepted in Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, and Japan for taxi payments.

UnionPay cards are also accepted by the subway in New York, Boston and some other cities in the US as well as in the subway in Moscow and Saint Petersburg in Russia. Also, the buses in Macau accept UnionPay mobile QuickPass.

The cardholders can also use the UnionPay cards to purchase Eurail Pass, THSRC and Taiwan Railway tickets online.

The ATMs and POS terminals in Hong Kong accept UnionPay cards, including the POS terminals of several channels and parking lots. UnionPay mobile QuickPass is accepted at about 20,000 POS terminals.
