Credit cards with an EMV chip are now used by
over a billion people worldwide, official statistics confirm.
Regional figures released by EMVCo, which sets
EMV standards and technical specification across the world, show a
36 percent global increase in card usage, with 578.5 million cards
in Europe alone.
The data also confirms the EMV standard as the
leading payments system worldwide, with figures for card usage
Western Europe topping 65 per cent, while 15.4 million terminals
are in use worldwide.
With 9.9 million terminals, Europe also has
the highest deployment rate of EMV technology (73 percent).
The U.S was excluded from the data as there
are no chip and pin devices with the EMV system in circulation.
“Breaking down the one billion deployment
figure by region enables us to clearly see the significant growth
of EMV card and terminal adoption and the continued acceptance of
EMV as the global payment standard worldwide,” said Jim Lee, Chair
of EMVCo.
