Spanish department store group El Corte Inglés has secured Visa Europe’s approval to deploy contactless payments in all its shopping centres.
Through these contactless payments, the store’s customers will be able to make payments just with a tap of their cards or mobile phones.
As part of this move, El Corte Inglés has installed more than 5,200 new terminals to implement contactless payments.
Currently, around 25% of the store’s terminals have been replaced with the new contactless units, but 60% of all terminals are expected to have the technology by the end of this year.
In November 2013, up to 2.1 million Visa contactless transactions took place in Spain and generated a total spend volume of 67.2m, 369% more than previous year.
Visa Spain and Portugal general manager, Luis García Cristobal, said: "It is very important that leading retail groups, such as El Corte Inglés, commit themselves with the innovation of payment technologies, so that their clients can benefit from the convenience, speed and security offered by contactless payments."
