Discover, the global digital bank and payments company, has revealed plans to hire nearly 1,000 employees for its new customer care centre in Chicago.

Located at 86th Street and Cottage Grove in Chicago’s Chatham neighbourhood, the more than 100,000ft2 customer centre is set to open by the end of this year.

The firm said that the majority of the openings will be for customer care representatives with a starting hourly wage of $17.25.

It is planning to recruit and train around 150 call agents this year, while the rest of the positions will be filled over the next four years.

The company said that it will prioritise employing local resources and has decided to hire minority-owned businesses in the renovations and operation of the centre, which will be led by Juatise Gathings.

Gathings has been part of Discover’s three customer care centres in the last decade.

Discover CEO and president Roger Hochschild said: “Discover recognises that traditional corporate site selection has contributed to issues of unequal opportunity in our society, and we want to be part of the solution.

“We hope our commitment to Chatham will serve as a springboard for further economic development in the area; and we’re excited to work with residents and community leaders and add to our award-winning customer service team.”

Meanwhile, the renovation plans for the centre include up to 5,000 ft2 of internal and external use space for community-based organisations.

Commenting on the development, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said: “More than just creating new jobs, this centre represents the latest step in our citywide mission to unlock the huge swaths of talent in neighborhoods like Chatham through bold initiatives such as INVEST South/West, which will strengthen both our communities and companies, and fuel Chicago’s economy for decades to come.”

Last December, Discover announced plans to hire 100 technology professionals for its growing UK office.
