Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) and Transport for New South Wales have announced plans to trial open payment technology across the entire Sydney ferry and light rail network.

The technology was developed by Cubic in association with Transport for London. It was tested on the Manly Ferry service in July last year, enabling over 15,000 Mastercard holders to tap on and pay for travel.

The expansion of the trial will also support American Express as well as Visa cardholders.

CTS senior vice president and managing director of Asia-Pacific Tom Walker said: “The trial has been a very important test for this complex new technology and we are delighted that contactless will now be expanded further.”

The new payment system will however, not replace smartcard ticketing system Opal.

NSW transport minister Andrew Constance said: “In New South Wales (NSW), we know transport is no longer just about infrastructure but also about embracing technology to provide the best services possible for our customers.
