The Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) has upgraded its EASY Card transit fare system by using the open payment technology of Cubic Transportation Systems.

Commuters will now be able to make tap-and-go payments with their contactless-enabled Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards directly at Metrorail faregates in Miami.

They can also pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Fitbit Pay.

The requirement to purchase transit cards or tickets is removed as the payments are directly processed against bankcard accounts of users.

The Metrobus service will add support for the payment system later in 2019.

Cubic president Matt Cole said: “At Cubic, one of our main focuses is to understand the goals and priorities of the transportation agencies we work with.

“Delivering a seamless travel experience through cutting-edge technologies is what we strive to do each day and we are very proud to continue supporting Miami-Dade DTPW as it modernises its transit system.”

Miami-Dade DTPW and Cubic’s relationship dates back to 2016.

In that year, Cubic secured a contract to overhaul Miami-Dade DTPW’s EASY Card revenue management system and provide back-office cloud computing services for 10 years.

Visa global head of contactless payments Dan Sanford said: “Tapping to pay at the fare gate helps save valuable time by removing the need to stand in line to purchase or load a separate transit card, while helping reduce congestion and avoid traffic.

“Riders can use any form of Visa contactless payment – whether it be a Visa contactless card or digital wallet– with the same trust and security as any other payment processed on Visa’s global payment network.”
