The survey, commissioned by MasterCard and conducted by Hall and Partners, asked some 1,000 card users across Europe if they feared they will pay more for any shortfall in retailer’s contributions to the card payment system. Almost eight out of ten respondents said they did, with Finland, Denmark and Spain the most worried.
Less than half of respondents said they would expect retailers to pass on card acceptance fee reductions directly to their customers in the form of lower retail prices.
According to the survey, a striking 70% of European consumers would use more cash if card fees were to go up. Six out of ten interviewed said they would reduce the number of payment cards.
Four out of ten interviewed said they would use less cash if the hidden cost of it were made more explicit.
