Paymium the company behind P2P currency digital currency Bitcoin has released a statement clarifying claims by numerous media outlets that it had become a registered European Payment Service Provider (PSP).

Media reports based upon a post on the Bitcoin-Central Forum suggested that French PSP Aqoba and the Crédit Mutuel Arkéa bank had reached an agreement which would see Bitcoin itself operate as a PSP.

The statement on Bitcoin-Central.net clarified that although a partnership had been agreed between Aqoba and Paymium this would be so the PSP could act as intermediary when individuals and corporations wished to engage in the exchange of Bitcoins.
In August of this year there was confusion over the launch of Bitcoins Paycard. BitInstant chief executive Charly Shrem had inadvertently made the card launch public in a web chat conversation and had attracted media attention for what is wasn’t going to be: a Bitcoin wallet. Shrem later confirmed that BitInstant’s card would not have a Bitcoin balance.
