UK card issuer Barclaycard has teamed up with French mobile
telecom operator Orange to form a strategic partnership aimed at
developing new co-branded products and services in the mobile,
financial and payment fields.
With a combined customer base of 28 million, Barclaycard and
Orange are hoping to accelerate the development and adoption of
mobile payment services in Europe, which have yet to gain
significant traction in the region. Barclaycard CEO Antony Jenkins
is confident about the partnership’s potential, saying he believes
all Barclaycard UK customers will be able to use their mobile
phones to pay for everyday items within three years.
Central to the partnership is the development of mobile payment
services using contactless technology on the MasterCard platform.
The partnership will also enable the two companies to offer alerts,
servicing capabilities and new banking applications for use in
mobile phones, as well as expanding to include other contactless
services within the ticketing, transport and rewards space.
The mobile contactless services being developed by Barclaycard
and Orange will use near-field-communication (NFC) technology, and
aim to build on Barclaycard’s experience of contactless in the UK,
where it has now issued more than 1.5 million cards, and Orange’s
expertise in mobile payment technology. Since 2005, Orange has
completed several mobile contactless trials in the UK, France and
Orange is already involved in the co-branded payments space,
having signed a deal with French banking group BNP Paribas in 2008
under which it has launched a co-branded credit card and prepaid
card. BNP Paribas is also working with Orange and other French
telecom operators to develop its own mobile payment propositions in
Jenkins said: “This partnership brings together a leader in
