Italian lender Banca Popolare di Bari has become the first European bank to announce plans to roll out NCR’s Interactive Banker technology.

Interactive Banker, software that allows bank staff to override ATM functions from a tablet PC, will be launched at flagship branches during 2014, as the bank implements its vision for the "branch of the future".

"Allowing customers to bank on their own terms is at the heart of how financial institutions are evolving their branch and omni-channel banking services," said Lorenza Sbarbaro, director of financial services, NCR Italy.

"Banca Popolare di Bari has a strong vision of how they wish to achieve this and we are proud to be their partner of choice for branch transformation."

The lender is also planning to roll out Interactive Teller – a service that allows customers to contact tellers in real time via video link for help with complex transactions, account servicing or purchasing banking products.

Banca Popolare di Bari said it also hoped to open more "branches of the future" in 2015.

NCR’s Interactive Teller technology is already in use across North America at institutions including Bank of America (BofA) and First Ontario Credit Union.

Its use at BofA has been particularly high profile because tellers at the Bank of America, led by Alex Shalom, picketed branches in 2013, concerned that they would lose their jobs to the new technology.

According to NCR, in the two years since it launched the Interactive Teller technology it has built up a customer base of over 70 customers in 30 US states.

The vendor is estimated to provide nearly a third of ATMs globally, has operations in over 180 countries and was ranked by research this year as the Asia-Pacific region’s biggest provider in terms of number of cash machines installed.
