Best known as a giant of the internet-based
retail market, Amazon.com is determined to achieve the same success
in the world of mobile payments.
Indeed with the launch of its latest offering,
TextBuyIt, Amazon now lays claim to offering customers using a
mobile device to access its mobile website the same features they
enjoy when shopping online via a computer.
According to Amazon customers opting for
TextBuyIt use the same login, payment and shipping information as
they normally do on a computer and using text messages can find the
product they are looking for and complete a purchase “in less than
a minute.”
To execute a purchase customers are required to
send a text message to Amazon with the name of the product, search
term, a bar code or International Standard Book Number (ISBN) code.
Amazon replies “within seconds” with the product or products that
match the search, along with prices.
To buy an item, customers reply to the text
message by entering the unique single-digit number next to the item
they want. Customers then receive a short phone call from Amazon
with the final details of their order and a request to confirm or
cancel the purchase.
Adding credence to Amazon’s enthusiastic
adoption of the mobile channel, the retailer noted in recent months
customers have used their mobile devices to purchase everything
from books to big screen TVs and $30,000 watches via its mobile
website.
