“We expect to see debit continue to cement its
place as the public’s plastic of choice in 2012, driven in large
part by the tightening of the economy and consumer desire to keep a
tighter rein on their spending. That’s not to say credit cards
won’t continue to have a major role to play – they will, however
regulation and consumer apprehension will mean growth in this
segment will be negligible in contrast to the expected growth in
debit. Of course, cash will also remain a key way to pay in Western
markets – our own research earlier this year showed as much.
However, we shouldn’t necessarily expect growth in cash, rather we
expect total ATM cash dispensed to remain flat over 2012.”
