The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced its intention to
implement biometric identification technology at the POS terminals
and ATMs by 2013.
The CBN’s Acting Director Gaius Emokpae unveiled the plans
during a seminar organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of
Nigeria.

Emokpae said that the introduction of biometric driven payments
is part of the government’s ambitious Vision 20:2020 economic
development programme.
Biometric ATMs and PoS are intended to prevent fraud and build
consumer confidence in the use of electronic channels, Emokpae
according to local media reports.
He added that biometric features would create a more secure
legal framework within which fight cases of electronic payments
fraud.
