As Bitcoin gains in popularity an increasing number of retailers worldwide are accepting the controversial virtual currency.

Coinmap, an online interactive map showing businesses that will accept Bitcoins has shown a threefold increase in the number of ‘bricks and mortar’ vendors around the world over the past month, the current number stands at over 2,100.

While it’s possible to use Bitcoins online for everything from gummi bears to university tuition, there is an increasing demand from Bitcoin users for real world application of the currency.

Businesses adopting Bitcoin include a youth hostel in Haikou, China, a hydroponic gardening supplier in Ashland, Oregon, printers in Cape Town, South Africa and the Pembury Tavern, the first London pub to accept Bitcoins .

Bitcoin’s volatile market price has attracted an a lot of media attention this year – it has been known to lose or gain more than a quarter of its value in a single day.
