The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a new Dubai Taxi Fares Pay Service, which is designed to allow customers to pay with Nol cards and all types of bank credit cards.

The new service, which will start from 1 January 2014, will allow visitors or residents in the country to smoothly and easily pay taxi fares without the need to carry cash while on the move.

In addition, the RTA is also planning to launch contactless payments for taxis with smartphones that support near field communications (NFC) technology.

Currently, taxi fares in Dubai are accepted only by cash. Nearly five million people have Nol cards that have been produced since September 2009.

The pay-as-you-go Nol cards are being used to buy tickets on Dubai’s metro and bus networks, apart from parking.

In 2012, RTA in association with Dubai Emirates National Bank launched Combi Card that provides benefits of both bank credit card and Nol card.
