American Express has updated its mobile app to allow eligible cardholders to pay directly for purchases with reward points.

When cardholders make a purchase of over $1 with a card in the membership rewards scheme, they can later go to their statement and choose to use their points to pay through the mobile app. The new feature is called ‘use points for charges.’

David Yoo, senior vice president of mobile products and services at American Express, said: "We’re committed to making membership mobile, recognizing a future where decisions on what, where, and how to buy increasingly happen through mobile devices,

"We want to be where our card members are so that they can get the most out of membership every day, and we can do that by connecting our card products to the mobile devices our card members rely on most."

American Express said the new function allows customers to choose exactly what they want to spend their points on.

Yoo said: "Our card members want flexibility, choice and the opportunity to use the rewards they earn for the things they need and want most.
