SmartMetric, a US-based biometric smart cards developer, is to begin production of new fingerprint activated EMV chip credit and debit cards.

The move by SmartMetric is to gain from increasing number of EMV cards in the market, with over 1.6 billion cards already issued by banks across the world.

SmartMetric CEO and president, Chaya Hendrick, said having successfully created an extremely thin fully functional fingerprint scanner that fits inside a credit card, SmartMetric is able to have the credit card’s EMV chip activated by the card owner after they touch a sensor on the card’s surface and a positive match is made with the owner’s fingerprint stored inside the card.

The new SmartMetric fingerprint card is not only compatible with existing chip card systems, but can also be adopted by card issuers while conforming to existing card specifications.
