Indian Railway Catering and Tourism (IRCTC) has widened the scope of its IRCTC RuPay prepaid card to include other services.

The card, hitherto used only for railway bookings, will now also enable payment at merchant locations such as restaurants, malls as well as can be used for online shopping.

The prepaid card was introduced in May in partnership with the Union Bank of India and the National Payment Corporation of India.

The card enables easy transactions on the railway booking website, where the first five transactions per month are provided free of transaction cost to users, with a rewards point system on each transaction.

IRCTC chairman and managing director A K Manocha said: "The IRCTC Union Bank Prepaid Card will further expand the online shopping preferences of our patrons, besides online rail ticketing."
