MasterCard has launched its new digital payments technology, MasterPass, in New Zealand.

MasterPass allows individuals to use their mobile phones, tablets or PCs to shop online, securely and conveniently, while eliminating the need for them to enter detailed shipping and card information to complete their online shopping at MasterPass merchant sites.

MasterPass, the digital platform from MasterCard, offers its customers a seamless, secure and speedy checkout, regardless of their location.

Local partners of MasterPass are Westpac New Zealand, which will be the first bank to issue digital wallets in New Zealand, and other payment technology providers like Fontiso, Flo2Cash, IP Payments, Payment Express, Paystation and Solutionists.

Local retailers that are already recognising MasterPass are Webjet, BuyInvite, DC Shoes, Jeanswest, LivingSocial, NZSALE, Quiksilver and Roxy.

Other partners working with MasterCard on MasterPass include ANZ, BNZ, and Kiwibank and the retail partners planning to implement include Book My Show, Briscoes, Event Cinemas, Fishpond, Live Nation, Living & Giving, Rebel Sport, Ticketmaster, plus many more.

MasterCard New Zealand country manager, Peter Chisnall, said: "MasterPass is about providing consumers and businesses with convenience, accessibility and security.

"With MasterPass, consumers can safely do their grocery shopping on the bus on the way home from work, or make a last minute gift purchase during their lunch break, without the need to re-enter card and shipping details," Chisnall said.

Westpac chief product officer, Shane Howell, said: "MasterPass is an extension of the Digital services and we expect it will quickly become very popular with our customers. We’re very excited Westpac can be the first New Zealand bank to offer MasterPass and expect this to translate to a more secure and seamless online experience."

Currently, more than 40,000 merchants around the world are accepting MasterPass for online payments.

Some of them are Zuji, Singapore Airlines, J. Crew, Rakuten, Kate Spade, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Boots UK, Bass Pro Shops and Beyond the Rack.
