WorldRemit, an online money transfer platform in London, has launched its service to Sri Lanka to enable customers in 50 countries to transfer money directly to eZ Cash mobile wallets.
The service will allow customers to send money to friends and family quickly in Sri Lanka and at low cost.
With eZ Cash, Sri Lankans including those without bank accounts can transfer funds to friends, pay water and electricity bills, shop for goods at physical merchants and online even pay health or life insurance premiums.
The eZ Cash service is now available to Dialog, Etisalat and Hutch subscribers, totalling 14 million people.
According to the World Bank, remittances to Sri Lanka accounted $7.03bn to the country’s economy in 2014, which is nearly 10% of total GDP.
WorldRemit senior mobile analyst Alix Murphy said: "We already offer mobile-to-mobile money transfers for countries as far flung as Ghana, Indonesia and Fiji.
