Cubic Transportation Systems, a division of Cubic Corporation, has won a $33m contract to modernise the fare payment system for Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works, enabling passengers to pay using contactless bank cards and mobile phones.
As per the terms of the agreement, Cubic also will provide 10-year of back office cloud computing and support services to Miami-Dade County for transit fare processing.
The project comprises updating the current Easy Card payment system to make it easier to load money onto cards through mobile devices.
Cubic will implement technology that allows passengers to tap NFC-enabled smartphones or contactless credit cards on the fare gate reader to pay instantly. The company will also upgrade fare terminals and the EASY Card back office to process account-based transactions.
In addition to EASY Card, Cubic’s payment technologies for DTPW will represent a hybrid system drawing from Chicago and London, developed by Cubic.
Additionally, commuters will be able to use mobile payments through mobile wallets, such as ApplePay, AndroidPay, and Masterpass. Emerging wearables, such as the Apple Watch and Samsung Gear, will also be accepted.
