Worldpay, a global payments technology company, has announced the launch of Worldpay MCP (Model Context Protocol), an AI-powered payment integration protocol designed to advance agentic commerce innovation.

The Worldpay MCP protocol is now available for immediate use on Worldpay’s Developer Hub and Github, enabling developers and merchants to download, modify, and deploy the solution to facilitate rapid AI agent and direct payment integrations with with Worldpay’s API.

The introduction of Worldpay MCP comes amid evolving consumer expectations, with a growing preference for autonomous and AI-driven shopping experiences. Recent research from Worldpay indicates that 44% of American shoppers are open to using AI bots for browsing on their behalf, highlighting a shift towards intelligent agents conducting searches and purchases on behalf of consumers.

Worldpay MCP aims to empower developers and merchants by providing a publicly available set of server specifications and tools.

According to Worldpay chief product officer Cindy Turner, “Agentic commerce is rapidly emerging as the next evolutionary step in online shopping. By launching Worldpay MCP, we’re answering the demand of developers and merchants, giving them the freedom to experiment, build and innovate in a controlled environment, while connecting directly to our global payment infrastructure. We’re not adding another protocol, we’re making them all work together for sellers.”

With Worldpay MCP, businesses can enable agentic payments where autonomous AI agents handle transactions and optimise payment flows. This capability is intended to help companies deliver seamless, personalised, and efficient commerce experiences as consumer interest in agentic commerce continues to grow.

Key features of Worldpay MCP include its open and free availability on Github, allowing developers to use the protocol without licensing fees or proprietary restrictions. It adopts a developer-first approach, simplifying the integration of AI agents and payment infrastructure, reducing complexity, and accelerating time to market for new solutions.

Worldpay MCP is optimised for direct connectivity with Worldpay’s global payment APIs, ensuring “secure and robust” payment processing for eligible merchants worldwide.

It is backed by Worldpay’s global scale, which includes processing over fifty billion transactions annually, holding more than sixty acquiring licences, and supporting one hundred thirty-five currencies. This infrastructure enables developers to test and validate AI agents in real-time within a secure environment before full deployment.

Built on the open Model Context Protocol, Worldpay MCP is designed to be standards-based and future-proof, supporting interoperability and scalability across evolving AI ecosystems. This approach aims to facilitate innovation in agentic commerce while ensuring compatibility with new technologies as they emerge.
