London’s Westminster City Council will begin
issuing Citi’s prepaid cards to residents to receive benefits and
allowances ranging from university maintenance to travel and
subsistence payments.
Under the pilot scheme, the residents of the
London borough will be able to use the prepaid cards at ATMs and
for over-the-counter purchases.

The council aims to reduce its processing
costs and generate savings by moving away from paper-based payment
instruments such as cash and cheques.
“We are delighted that Westminster City
Council and Citi have come together to reduce payment processing
costs and at the same time provide a better service to the
end-user,” said Paul Coen, head of Citi’s UK Public Sector
Group.
“Citi is keenly aware of the budgetary
challenges facing the public sector and through this contract we
are confident we will be helping Westminster to get more for
less.”
Citi’s procurement contract with Westminster
City Council has been let under Lot 2 of the Buying Solutions’
Government Procurement Card (GPC) framework agreement. This means
the council can participate without the costs of having to manage
its own procurements.

Lewisham is using Citi’s prepaid cards for payments to young people
leaving care homes and Havering, aligned with 29 other councils in
the UK, will use the solution to provide social care payments.
