Western Union has teamed up with cross-border payments network Thunes to enable its customers to transfer directly into mobile wallets in emerging markets.

Subsequently, the partnership will enable users of Western Union’s network of agents worldwide to send funds directly into a recipient’s mobile wallet.

However, for this to work mobile wallets provided by companies must be connected to Thunes’ network.

Thunes interconnect diverse payments systems. Furthermore, this enables mobile wallet operators, corporations, merchants, money transfer operators, and banks to move funds in and out of emerging countries in real-time.

Western Union global head of account payout network Sobia Rahman said: “We are continuously expanding and enhancing our account payout portfolio, providing customers with multiple payout options including bank accounts, cards or mobile wallets.

“Our goal is to make digital money transfer services more accessible, with a specific focus on enabling mobile transactions.”

The partners in a statement said that the partnership will enable greater financial access for consumers in emerging markets by offering services direct to mobile wallets or bank accounts.
