Retail giant Walmart has launched its own mobile payments solution Walmart Pay, which works on any Apple, iOS or Android smartphone.

Walmart Pay will work at any checkout lane and with any major credit, debit, pre-paid or Walmart gift card, all through the Walmart mobile app, the retailer said in a statement.

The service will be launched in select stores beginning this month, with plans to roll out nationwide by the first half of 2016.

The solution will also allow for the integration of other payment options such as mobile wallets in the future.

Currently, the Walmart app is being used by 22 million customers actively each month in the Google and Apple app stores.

Walmart Global eCommerce president and CEO Neil Ashe said: "The Walmart app was built to make shopping faster and easier.
