Vodafone is moving further into the mobile
commerce space with its acquisition of Vouchercloud, a
smartphone-based coupon provider.
The Vodafone Group was already a shareholder
in Vouchercloud with a 21% stake since May 2011, but increased its
stake in the company to 57% on 6 June. It may further increase its
stake in the future, Vodafone confirmed.

Vodafone Group commercial development director Tobin Ireland
said:
“Mobile couponing is set to grow rapidly across Vodafone’s
businesses as cost-conscious consumers increasingly turn to their
smartphones to hunt for bargains and collect loyalty points. We
look forward to working more closely with Vouchercloud in future as
m-commerce services become ever more central to consumers’ daily
lives.”
Vouchercloud makes use of the GPS system of
smartphones, with which it locates discount deals from
near-by merchants, and guides consumers to the shop with map
app.
As with many other mobile coupon deals,
consumers will have to download the voucher and show it to the
merchant to redeem the discount. There is also an online version of
Vouchercloud for e-commerce.

launched on 6 June] over the coming months as part of the global
communications company’s broader mobile commerce strategy.”
