Visa International Thailand has rolled out
a Square-style mobile POS device in Thailand, which connects via a
smartphone’s headphone jack and allows merchants to process card
transactions through a magstripe reader.

Visa Thailand country manager Somboon
Krobteeranon said: “The web, mobile and social networks are
converging, changing the way people shop, pay and get paid the
world over – and we see this trend starting to take hold in

“We are committed to bringing new ways to
pay to Thailand in an effort to expand the reach and acceptance of
the trusted and secure Visa network,” he added.

The product launch comes after Visa Europe
refused to allow  mobile POS iZettle to process Visa
transactions, due to security concerns related to the fact that
iZettle relies on chip and signature technology.

Krobteeranon told the Bangkok Post that the
Thai magstripe device still “needs approval from both Visa and card
issuers before sending it to merchants.”
