UnionPay International has been accepted by eight African countries following its cooperation with Société Générale.

The African countries now accepting UnionPay include: Madagascar, Benin, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea, Senegal and Chad.

With Société Générale enabling UnionPay acceptance at all of its merchants in these eight countries, about 20% of all merchants in these countries accept UnionPay cards, UnionPay International said in a statement.

UnionPay currently operates in 44 African countries, including South Africa where 50% of all ATMs accept UnionPay cards, and Mauritius where 90% of all merchants and 70% of all ATMs accept UnionPay cards.

UnionPay debit cards, prepaid cards, commercial cards have also been issued in D.R Congo and Mauritius. Plans are also on to offer online payment services to its UnionPay cardholders in the continent.
