UnionPay International has teamed up with ANZ to introduce its UnionPay QuickPass service in Fiji, along with other island nations including Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, and Solomon Islands.

The partnership will enable UnionPay cardholders to use QuickPass-enabled UnionPay chip cards and mobile phones to make tap & go payments while visiting these countries.

“The Pacific island countries are an important part of the natural extension of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and Asia-Pacific integration. China has become an important trading partner, export market and source of foreign capital for the island countries,” UnionPay said in a statement.

Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, Samoa are emerging as important tourist destinations for Chinese citizens, with nearly 150,000 tourists from China said to have visited these nations last year.

ANZ Fiji country head Saud Minam said: “Enabling contactless payments is another step towards driving a cashless and paperless economy in Fiji.

“ANZ has been working closely with UnionPay for a number of years now and it’s wonderful to see the results of that partnership. As the largest bank in Fiji, we will continue to invest in more convenient and secure digital options for customers.”
