UnionPay has extended its cooperation with Global Payments, an international provider of payment processing services, to expand the local UnionPay acceptance network enabling more Canadian merchants to accept UnionPay cards.
The local UnionPay card acceptance network will encompass department stores, airlines, supermarkets and entertainment located in major cities, including Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
The expansion of UnionPay card network, which is accepted at over 80% of ATMs in Canada, will benefit the increased number of Chinese tourists and students who travel to Vancouver but have their bank accounts in China for making their everyday purchase without a fuss.
The Canadian payment processor Moneris Solutions chief sales and relationship officer Jeff Guthrie told the Vancouver Sun: "The push will include major supermarkets, drug stores and every pizza place and fast food joint.
"We are testing it out with smaller merchants and will build it out with larger retailers, such as London Drugs and others of that size, who might be very interested in enabling their customers who have UnionPay debit card accounts."
