UnionPay International has announced that its credit cards would be accepted at all 12,000 FamilyMart stores in Japan starting 2 February 2016.

Following this deal, UnionPay credit cards are accepted at all the three major chain convenience stores in Japan, namely Lawson, 7-ELEVEn and FamilyMart, accept UnionPay cards.

The UnionPay card allows cardholders to make PIN-free payment for purchases less than JPY10,000.

In Japan, UnionPay cards are now accepted at nearly 80,000 ATMs and about 400,000 merchants. The company’s acceptance footprint in the country covers major cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

The Chinese card company also revealed that it is expanding to several second- and third-tier cities of Japan. It is also eyeing several merchant categories such as accommodation, traffic, catering and entertainment.

According to data, five million Chinese tourists visited Japan in 2015, with an average spending of 16,000 Yuan per person.
