US retailer Target has agreed to a $39.4m settlement with MasterCard and other financial organisations in connection to the retailer’s 2013 data breach.

The breach, which occurred during the holiday shopping season, compromised at least 40 million credit and debit cards.

Under the settlement, Target will have to pay $20.25m to banks and credit unions, and $19.11m as reimbursement to MasterCard issuers.

The retailer reached a similar settlement with MasterCard in April, but the deal was scrapped in May as it failed to receive support from card issuers.

Earlier this year, the retailer also reached a $67m settlement with Visa over the data breach.
