US technology provider SmartMetric has filed a
patent infringement lawsuit against card issuers Visa and
MasterCard.

The lawsuit, filed in California Federal
Court, is in defence of SmartMetric’s US patent 6,792,464 which
concerns both contact and contactless smart card technology,
specifically when used to automatically access a credit card
company network via contact points such as an ATM machine.

SmartMetric is seeking awards for damages and
a preliminary and permanent court injunction against MasterCard and
Visa to prohibit further infringement as well as court costs
incurred by the proceedings.

The complaint was filed on 29 August 2011.
MasterCard and Visa were unavailable for comment.
