Singapore has selected digital security firm Gemalto’s NFC ticketing technology to enable public transit commuters to pay their fare using their smartphone.
The technology vendor said that its UpTeq Multi-Tenant NFC SIM will enable commuters to use the embedded EZ-Link application to pay their trnsit fares by simply tapping their phone.
Even mobile network operators (MNOs) and banks can use this solution to provide new value-added services, the company added.
The project is spearheaded by a consortium of which Gemalto and EZ-Link are part of. The other partners of the consortium include governing bodies and MNOs.
EZ-Link CEO Nicholas Lee said: "EZ-Link is pleased to have concluded the trial with our partners, and together with Gemalto, we have successfully launched the EZ-Link NFC SIM to enable commuters to make public transit payments with their NFC-enabled mobile phones."
Gemalto president for South Asia & Japan Michael Au said: "This initiative is a Singapore first for mass transit. In the future, our NFC SIM can aggregate loyalty cards and discount coupons, delivering one-stop convenience for the users."
