Singapore mobile
operators SingTel and M1 have launched a contactless payments
service, in a sign of growing interest in the technology generated
by Singapore governments’ efforts to build a SGD40m (USD32m) NFC
infrastructure.

SingTel, Southeast
Asia’s largest telecoms company, has partnered with contactless
prepaid card system provider EZ-Link to launch a SIM card and a
mobile app.

SingTel’s new SIM card
will allow owners of NFC-enabled devices to make contactless
payment by tapping their phones on terminals connected with the
EZ-Link network, currently available in 20,000 outlets including
stores, taxis and fast food restaurants.

The app for NFC
smartphones launched by EZ-Link will allow users to monitor
transactions made with their EZ-link prepaid account, to top it up
with credit or debit cards, and to sign up for an account
blocking service.

EZ-Link is part of a
consortium appointed by the Singapore government to build the new
NFC infrastructure. The consortium also includes Gemalto, Citibank
and DBS Bank.

Earlier this month,
Singapore two other main telecommunication providers, M1 and
StarHub, have partnered with EZ-link and MasterCard to offer NFC
payment services, meaning the technology is now available for users
of any mobile phone operator in Singapore
