Canadian e-commerce company Shopify has launched a new portfolio of POS hardware, including a retail terminal, to help merchants improve their customer’s in-store experience.

The new collection includes tap & chip reader, dock and retail stand.

The new POS terminal will enable customers to pay by tapping their payment-enabled phone or inserting their debit or credit card.

The new lineup of hardware can be placed on a traditional checkout counter, or simply carried and used around the store, the company said.

The POS terminal also connects to Shopify POS, which is software from the firm. The software provides inventory management, secure payments and a consolidated backend that links directly with a merchant’s online store.

The dock is designed to hold and charge the tap & chip reader. For a traditional countertop checkout, the reader can be connected with the dock.

It can also be detached to enable retailers accept payments from their customers throughout the store.

The new lineup of retail hardware is currently available only in the US.

Shopify chief product officer Craig Miller said: “We’ve helped merchants successfully build and grow their online stores for 14 years, and now we’re the best partner to help entrepreneurs capitalise on the huge opportunity of in-person selling.

“Digitally native brands want to build loyal audiences through retail locations, and we’ve designed the best products to help them achieve this success.”

Couple of years back, Shopify launched a new card reader for in-person selling. The wireless card reader offers EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) support, and enables merchant to sell their products offline in a quick and secure way.
