RSwitch, the national payments switch of Rwanda, has partnered with UnionPay International to accept UnionPay cards at ATMs of all the member banks by the end of 2015.

The move aims to expand the ATM acceptance of UnionPay cards in Rwanda to about 50%.

The partnership will allow RSwitch’s merchants to accept UnionPay cards in the near future. Currently, more than 50% of merchants accept UnionPay cards in Rwanda.

Rwandan Central Bank governor John Rwangobwa said that the Central Bank is willing to facilitate partnership between industry parties with UnionPay International to boost UnionPay card acceptance in Rwanda.

Chinese ambassador to Rwanda Shen Yongxiang said that the alliance between the two companies will facilitate the expansion of UnionPay card acceptance environment as well as the development of local payment industry.
