Rakuten Card, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Rakuten, has partnered with China UnionPay to allow China UnionPay cardholders to make purchases at Rakuten Card merchants.

As part of the deal, Rakuten is now accepting payments made through China UnionPay cards on Rakuten Global Market, the overseas sales service of the company’s internet shopping mall Rakuten Ichiba.

Currently, the China UnionPay cards are accepted at 60 merchants. The company further plans to expand that number in future.

Additionally, the company is also planning to accept the cards at Rakuten Ichiba merchants, and other Rakuten Card merchants by spring 2014 or later.

China UnionPay has so far issued over four billion cards worldwide, which are accepted in 140 countries and regions at around 18 million merchants.
