Payment Data Systems has enabled its Akimbo Prepaid MasterCard users, including the co-branded reloadable cards distributed by its corporate clients, to use Apple’s mobile payment platform Apple Pay.

Apple Pay enables customers to make purchases at retailers by adding participating credit and debit cards to their Apple Wallet. It also mitigates risk of fraud by authorising transactions with a one-time unique dynamic security code.

The Akimbo Card is a consumer-facing social payments provider and prepaid card.

In November 2015, Payment Data Systems launched Akimbo Now, a new virtual card account platform and API that allows businesses and third-party applications to send rewards, incentives, and other payments. In December 2015, the company introduced a new gift card named Akimbo Gift MasterCard that can be ordered online, sent by email or traditional mail.

Payment Data Systems subsidiary FiCentive president and CEO Louis Hoch said: "Being first-to-market with the latest payment innovations is a top priority for our prepaid card solutions, and we’re proud to launch Apple Pay support for our flagship consumer card brand Akimbo.

"Our goal is to help businesses use the Akimbo platform to deliver a wide variety of payments from rewards and incentives to regular payroll. We’ve built one of the most unique consumer reloadable card programs in the market today and look forward to continuing to develop and grow our Akimbo platform."
