Orange Money and Visa
prepaid accounts will be interconnected in Africa and the Middle
East, the two companies said at the Mobile World Congress in
Barcelona.

France Telecom-Orange
and Visa announced that they will be joining forces to offer
payment capability to unbanked and underbanked consumers.

The integration of
both services will mean that Orange Mobile subscribers will be
connected to VisaNet, Visa’s payment network.

Customers of Orange
Money, a mobile phone-based payment service in developing
countries, will soon have access to Visa Mobile prepaid account
features, the companies assured.

“We already provide
secure and convenient payment capability to 3.5 million unbanked or
financially under-served African citizens,” said Orange’s executive
director for marketing and innovation Jean- Paul Cottet.

The two companies
will offer P2P remittances, bill payments, and agent-based cash-in
and cash-out services for loading or withdrawing funds.
