Oberthur Technologies (OT) has said that it will provide pre-loaded chip cards to MasterCard Aid Network to give people in need access to basic necessities such as food, medicine and shelter.

MasterCard Aid Network is a non-financial service that has been designed by MasterCard to address the challenge humanitarian organizations face providing aid in areas of political and economic unrest.

The service streamlines aid distribution even in the absence of a telecommunications infrastructure. It enables impacted populations to secure basic needs swiftly with the simple insertion of a card.

OT claims that its chip cards, which are pre-loaded with authorization, will help modernize the aid system that has relied on a paper voucher system till now. Paper voucher system is largely crippled by slow distribution and with a high risk of fraud.

With OT’s chip cards, beneficiaries just have to insert their card into a dedicated terminal, select the groceries and produce they are entitled to by tapping the corresponding photos on a screen, and enter a PIN to securely verify their transaction.
