Use of electronic cards for making retail purchases in New Zealand reached NZ$4.9bn in January 2016, an increase of 5.2% compared to the previous year, according to data from Statistics New Zealand.

The largest movement was recorded in the hospitality sector where spending increased 1.2%, and durables where spending increased 0.8%. Card spending in fuel was down by 2%.
Statistics New Zealand business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said: "Spending rose in three of the six retail industries. Hospitality and durables had the largest rises, while fuel had the biggest fall."
Core retail spending, excluding the vehicle-related industries, was up by 0.6% in January 2016 after remaining flat in December 2015.
Total electronic card spending value, including the two non-retail industries, increased 0.6% in January after rising 0.4% in December 2015.
