NXP Semiconductors, the world’s largest
supplier of NFC chips, has lowered its projection for the total NFC
phone shipments for 2011 by almost 50% to fewer than 40m.

This announcement follows the release of NXP’s
second quarter results which revealed that orders for NFC chips
from handset makers had come in lower than expected.

“All the indications we have is that the
opportunity is just as significant as we have said,” said Richard
Clemmer, CEO of NXP in a conference call with financial
analysts.

“If you look at it on a near-term basis it
hasn’t materialised at the rate we had planned for and the rate we
had put capacity in place for.”

The failure of mobile operators to order as
many as expected, continuing problems with NFC business models
and business challenges experienced by handset makers were among
the reasons given for the lack of orders.

NXP still expect the shipments of phones to
double next year but claim there are lots of factors to consider.
“It depends on the 60 handsets that we are currently working with,
how fast they ramp up, and actually some suppliers pushing out new
models,” said Clemmer.
