A network fault left HSBC customers across the Middle East and North Africa unable to withdraw money or use their debit cards on 7 December.

The problem was due to a technical problem on the bank’s electronic transaction network, affecting customers for a few hours.

A spokesperson for HSBC Dubai apologised for the disruption. They said: "HSBC confirms we faced a system issue that impacted some HSBC debit card transactions in MENA yesterday.

"All systems were fully restored in about an hour and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers."

HSBC UAE also apologised via Twitter and said it would take on board customer suggestions that they should be notified by SMS or email in the event of future glitches.

The bank has agreed to review any transactions that were affected and the spokesperson for HSBC Dubai said: "We request any potential impacted customers to follow the standard dispute process."
