Credit card lender MBNA has announced it will
shortly begin issuing the UK’s first American-Express (Amex)
branded contactless credit cards.

Through the deal, MBNA, a subsidiary of Bank
of America (BofA), will become the world’s first issuer of
EMV-enabled contactless credit cards for three of the major payment
schemes.

The lender already supports MasterCard and
Visa’s contactless applications.

“We are delighted to offer a world first in
providing EMV-enabled contactless credit cards across the three
major payment networks,” said Ian O’Doherty, Europe card executive
for BofA, which operates the MBNA brand in the UK.

“It is a sign of our global commitment to
innovation and to delivering for our customers.”

This move is said to be part of a phased
initiative by MBNA to issue contactless-enabled cards for new and
replacement credit cards for all of its UK customers.

In a break with traditional contactless
applications, MBNA will require customers to input their PIN during
the card’s first use and randomly thereafter in a bid to ensure
secure transactions.

Amex contactless payments are limited to $15
($24.2).
