Malaysia-based Maybank has teamed up with the Ministry of Tourism and Culture and Visa to launch a new prepaid card for tourists.

The new card, dubbed as Maybank MOTAC Visa Prepaid Card, enables customers to purchase goods and services like any credit or debit card. It does not require an account with the bank, and can be loaded through online payment on Maybank2u, cash deposit machines at Maybank branches or interbank GIRO services. It can be used for purchases at any of the 40,000 registered Visa merchants nationwide, reported The Rakyat Post.

Maybank executive vice president and head of cards B. Ravintharan said: "The prepaid card can be obtained at Maybank, tourism desk or the airport. You need only register online or fax us and you’ll receive an SMS alert after your prepaid card is activated."

Using the new card, foreigners can withdraw cash from Maybank ATMs avoiding interbank fees charged on overseas-issued ATM card withdrawals.

The card offers 15% off best available rates at its partner Berjaya Hotels and Resorts’ outlets in Malaysia, including Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Berjaya Langkawi Resort, Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and many others. It also provides 15% discount on all food items at Rasa Utara and a free original glazed doughnut with purchase of coffee at Krispy Creme.

Ravintharan added: "We have a limited edition of about 10,000 cards available nationwide and the card is valid for use of seven years.
