Mastercard has collaborated with phos to pilot a mobile solution that facilitates contactless payment acceptance on Android mobile devices.

All this can be done without the help of additional hardware.

With phos, Android devices can accept payments with contactless cards as well as other NFC-enabled devices.

Merchants can download phos from the GooglePlay store.

Mastercard certified phos through its Mastercard Digital Enablement Service as a digital POS solution for Android devices.

phos co-founder Antonina Martinova said: “Traditional point of sale terminals may not always answer the specific needs of small and micro merchants and are therefore often out of their reach.

“With phos these businesses can now leverage their mobile devices to accept contactless payments.”

Around 200 merchants in the UK, Germany, Bulgaria, and Romania are participating in the trial.

The trial is supported by e-money provider Paynetics as the acquiring bank. The firm has licences across the European Union.

The aim of the initiative is to encourage the adoption of cashless payments among micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

Mastercard senior vice president of business development and fintech in the UK Scott Abrahams said: “Payment choice is now fundamental, and to date this has been a challenge for micro businesses.

“This solution by phos has been designed to meet the flexibility and cost requirements of small and micro business owners, by leveraging existing technology – their smart phone – to accept convenient and secure contactless payments.”
