New Years Eve is always going to be an
expensive night out but thousands of cardholders in the UK suffered
more than most, seeing purchases doubled by a ‘one-off
technical glitch’ in Lloyds Bank wireless payment
terminals.

Lloyds Banking Group said the fault lies with
Lloyds TSB Cardnet – its payment processing service provided to
retailers. The incident is thought to not only impact Lloyds’
customers but anyone who made a payment to a merchant using the
bank’s payment system.

As a result, over 200,000 consumers are
believed to have been affected.

Lloyds told UK newspaper The
Telegraph
that retailers experienced a ‘system error’ with
wireless terminals used to deal with card payments.

When asked by CI to elaborate on the
technical failings, a spokesperson for the bank said: “It was just
a one-off glitch. Lloyds TSB Cardnet has never seen an incident
like this happen before and it is not something we anticipate
happening again.

“We were contacted by the customers that were
affected and the situation was resolved within one working
day.”
