US-based m-payments firm LevelUp is integrating its services with iBeacon, Apple’s latest iOS location services, in a bid to enhance mobile payments at participating merchants.

iBeacons are small devices that can be placed in shops and use Bluetooth Low Energy to ping customers carrying iPhones.

The move follows a pilot program conducted by LevelUp earlier in May, which reported that the businesses using iBeacons recorded 22% increase in customer spend through the LevelUp platform.

LevelUp chief Ninja Seth Priebatsch said by analyzing data from hundreds of its merchant partners, the company found that customers typically spend up to 60% more than average when they know they’re about to unlock a loyalty reward.

"Building iBeacon support into apps built on the LevelUp platform will help customers stay apprised of their upcoming rewards and help businesses earn more through their loyalty programs," added Priebatsch.

Having supplied 50 of its participating merchants with the iBeacons, the company plans to deliver over 1,000 more before the end of summer.
