Less than 1% of the total ATMs in Europe have been upgraded to Windows 7 as Microsoft ended technical assistance for its 12-year-old operating system, Windows XP, on 8 April 2014, according to a research from RBR.
Microsoft has stopped providing support including automatic updates, as well as Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP, making the operating system more vulnerable to malware and other security risks.

About 89% of the machines in the continent were still running the old operating system at the end of 2013, with 0.7% of the total upgraded to Windows 7.
According to the RBR report, 23 of 33 countries covered under the study have no Windows 7 ATMs.
A separate study from the US National ATM Council stated that a majority of ATMs operated by non-bank providers at retail sites do not use Windows XP.
